How AgentFest Works
It's Shane Gericke writing from ITW and ThrillerFest. I'm deputy director, and in charge of AgentFest, so I thought I'd take a moment to explain how the event works.
What to expect?
AgentFest runs about three hours the afternoon of Thursday, July 9, at the hotel. We will have forty top N.Y. literary agents from which you can choose. The agents will be split into several rooms, fifteen or twenty agents to a room, arranged alphabetically, with sign boards. Their names and bios are on the ThrillerFest website, so you can scout them ahead of time and rank them in order according to which agents are priorities for you..
When I give the word, all the authors who signed up for AgentFest will walk into the rooms and line up in front of the various agents. Each agent will hear a pitch from the first author in line, and then make a decision whether to pass on the idea or seek further information in the form of material submitted after the conference. It's like speed dating--the idea is to get you in front of as many agents as our three hours allow. That could be anywhere from ten to thirty agents, depending on how long you have to wait in line.
The lines are free-forming and self-selected, so if the line for an agent you want is too long, break off and head for another agent whose line might be shorter. You'll have plenty of time to get most, if not all, of the agents you seek, because you're not limited to an appointment schedule. There will be an R&R break--Restroom & Relaxation--in the middle of the session. Soft drinks are provided.
By the end of the afternoon, you'll have pitched your book proposal to more than a dozen of the biggest and best agents in the industry. Nowhere else can you get that much opportunity in one event--so many NY agents coming to YOU!
Hope to see you there!
Shane
