The Chopin Manuscript wins top honors
Part of ITW's mission statement reads: "To promote the thriller genre at an innovative and superior level for and through our Active Members." Over the last four years I, along with the rest of the board and committee heads, have looked for ways to do that, and one of the most fruitful is our association with Audible.
I'm really proud to announce that our first project together, The Chopin Manuscript, was awarded the 2008 Audio Book of The Year on May 30th at BEA at the Audio Publishers Association's Audie Awards.
The Chopin Manuscript is an original serialized thriller created exclusively for audio by a stellar list of thriller writers and produced by Audible.com. It's a project that Steve Feldber, Director of Content at Audible, and I only imagined would ever happen when we sat down over coffee at BEA 2006 to brainstorm about how ITW and Audible might work together.
Kudos to each and every author who contributed: Jeffery Deaver who started and ended the story, Lee Child, David Hewson, James Grady, S. J. Rozan, Erica Spindler, John Ramsey Miller, David Corbett, John Gilstrap, Joseph Finder, Jim Fusilli who also edited the project, Peter Spiegelman, Ralph Pezzullo, Lisa Scottoline, and P. J. Parrish. And of course congratulations and thanks to Steve Feldber and everyone at Audible.
"I'm delighted for ITW and the contributors, who did a fantastic job picking up the wonderful story Jeff gave us. Audible's presentation and promotion were excellent. I think the project exceeded our expectations from the beginning, thanks to the writers' creativity and spirit of cooperation," said Fusilli.
The other audiobooks that were nominated in this category were: Steven Colbert's I AM AMERICA; THE BIBLE EXPERIENCE, a star-studded, multi-cast recording of the Old Testament featuring talent like Denzel Washington (the same company's New Testament recording was last year's Audiobook of the Year);THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET, a wonderfully creative children's book; and, last but not least, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS.
As Jeff Deaver said: "Beating God and Harry Potter is one thing . . . but Colbert????? It's a humbling experience."
