Fearless, but still quirky
Fearless Fourteen, Janet Evanovich's latest installment in the life of bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, is all about old friendships that are turned on their ear. Joe Morelli, the former bad guy turned vice cop and on-again/off-again love interest, has his past life thrown in his face when cousin Dom Rizzi, a convicted bank robber, is paroled. Nobody has ever found the nine million that went missing, and everybody wants it. What does that have to do with Stephanie? Unfortunately, she has the task of picking up her latest "skip," Loretta, Dom's sister. After Dom goes missing, the partners-in-crime who are searching for the money kidnap Loretta. To get her back so the woman can show up in court on time, Stephanie and Joe realize they're going to have to find the bank money. Add to that a country music star she has to help babysit with Ranger, a video-game-addicted teenager named Zook--who may or may not be a very close relative of Joe, a stalker, the upcoming marriage of best friend Lula to Ranger's co-worker Tank, and a monkey named Carl, and Stephanie's life is once again a mess!Fans of Evanovich's bestselling series won't walk away disappointed. ITW contributing editor Cathy Clamp sat down with the author to get the scoop about this future bestseller.
When I hang out with my cop friends its over a couple pitchers of beer and we don't talk about emotional conflicts ...unless it's to bitch about their crummy salaries.
Did you learn anything that surprised you about career criminals or repeat bank robbers during the research for this (or previous) book(s)? Research? See above answer.
Tell me a little more about how the monkey plays into the plot and how you happened upon that plot device, to give the reader a little more depth.
I'm friends with Carl Edwards (NASCAR driver) and when Carl wins a race he does a back flip off the top of his car. So I thought it would be fun to make Carl a monkey and have him do a backflip in the book. If you're looking for something fun you can't go wrong with midgets and monkeys.
Is there anything you'd like the reader to know that you couldn't quite fit into the Author Notes?
What are author notes?
Stephanie is once again stuck firmly between Morelli and Ranger. Are there any surprises or character foreshadowings in this book that the reader is dying to know?
Ranger gets groped in an elevator and it's actually his first groping so I suppose it could qualify for a surprise. At least he was surprised. I looked up character foreshadowing in Wikipedia and I don't think I do it.
Would you like me to mention in the article about the contest you're running to name Book 15?
Oh God no, don't mention it. Last year we got over 20,000 entries just off my website alone.
Readers always like to hear tidbits about the creative process for a book that make them feel connected. Anything interesting to share that your regular newsletter/website readers don't know?
My readers know everything, including the fact that I gained fifteen pounds writing the last book. Every time Stephanie Plum walks into a bakery I gain weight.
